Jags hosting Jarvis Christian in RRAC Quarterfinals
Jose Martinez understands this time of year well for the UHV men's soccer team.
The senior forward from Houston has played in five postseason games and was a member of the 2020 and 2021 Red River Athletic Conference championship-winning teams.
When the fourth-seeded Jaguars (11-3-2) host fifth-seed Jarvis Christian (9-4-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday for the RRAC Quarterfinals, it will be another chance at hardware for UHV. The winner will advance to the RRAC Semifinals on Nov. 9 hosted by Texas A&M-Texarkana.
"Every senior wants to leave with a championship," Martinez said. "I believe the freshmen and the sophomores, they understand the effort we have put into the game. Since preseason, we've known how hard it was going to be."
UHV secured fourth place and the right to host the first round of the RRAC Tournament thanks to a 2-1 win over Texas A&M-San Antonio on Saturday with junior Adam Thompson scoring the game's winning goal.
Heading into Saturday, the Jaguars have gone unbeaten in their previous four matches.
"I think the guys have worked really hard over the last couple of weeks," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "We've changed a little bit of how we play, but I think they've done a really good job adapting and having success with the system. I think we've been doing a good job and we have a lot of confidence right now."
Thompson's goal Saturday was his third this season. He's scored twice in the last three matches for the Jaguars since moving upfield from his traditional defender position.
The Portsmouth, England, native joined the Jaguars in 2021, the year UHV won both the conference regular season and tournament titles before advancing to the NAIA tournament.
"Everybody has a completely clean slate for a record," Thompson said of what he's learned in the playoffs. "It's completely even at this point. Anybody can pick up a result against anybody. UHV has been historically good (in the playoffs). So for us, having a clean slate is perfect because we want to win."
Saturday will be UHV's ninth consecutive appearance in the RRAC Tournament, a streak which dates to when the Jaguars joined the conference in 2015. During that stretch, the Jaguars have won three tournament titles (2017, 2019, 2021).
Saturday will also be a rematch of an Oct. 2 clash between the Jaguars and Bulldogs in which UHV won 1-0 thanks to a second-half header from Philipp Kueck.
"Jarvis is a good team," Rigby said. "They'll come in and give us a good test. We're at that point in the year where we just have to be on every game; we don't have the luxury of having a bad day at this point. So, we just have to make sure we have a good week of preparation and get ready for Saturday."
