The UHV men's soccer team notched its first win of the season with a 2-0 result over Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Saturday.
The win comes after a 2-2 draw against Texas Wesleyan on Thursday in which the Jaguars were up 2-0 at one point.
"I think we had a good practice Friday," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "I think we were all on the same page about how we came up a bit short on Thursday. So today was a response we needed. I'm really proud of the guys."
After the first 64 minutes went scoreless, the Jaguars (1-0-1) got goals from Einar Rolfsen and Jose Martinez in the 65th and 67th minutes respectively.
"Both guys are just hungry to score," Rigby said. "Einar is a bit of an opportunistic finisher; just throws himself at the ball and he does really well around the goal."
Martinez provided the cross for Rolfsen's second goal in as many matches. Martinez's brace was the 10th goal of the senior's career.
The Houston native noted Rolfsen's opener provided a spark for the Jaguars' attack. Prior to the game's opening goal, UHV took eight shots.
"Some of our younger guys have a lot of energy," Martinez said. "Us seniors, we can also learn from the freshmen and them from us. The energy, the willingness to do something for the team is what motivates us. We were dominating the game, it was just a matter of time for the goal to go in."
The Jaguars will head to the Houston Amateur Sports Park on Wednesday to face Wiley College in non-conference play.
