Kueck heads home winner for Jags against Jarvis Christian
A set-piece goal proved to be the difference for the UHV men's soccer team on Monday.
Sophomore defender Philipp Kueck nodded home an Antoine Detavernier corner kick in the 64th minute against Jarvis Christian to secure a 1-0 win in Red River Athletic Conference play.
It was the second-career goal for the German center back.
"It's always great to score goals, especially as a defender. It doesn't happen often," Kueck said. "But for me, it's not really the goal that makes me happy. It's always to win. So, if someone else had scored, I would feel the same."
The Jaguars (6-1-1, 4-1-0) had their fair share of opportunities prior to Kueck's header. UHV had 10 shots before the goal, forcing Jarvis Christian's (3-3-2, 1-2-2) Juan Mora into four saves during that time.
UHV managed 13 total shots on Monday with five going on frame. Klaidas Pudlauskas, Kagiso Madisha and Yahir Pena led the way for the Jaguars with two each.
"Set pieces are crucial when you're not playing particularly well," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "I was a little surprised how we came out and played today. But yeah, Phil stepped up in a big moment. We'll take the win"
Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Kaeppeli made two saves to earn the Jaguars' fifth shutout this season. It's the 12th career clean sheet for Kaeppeli, tying Palemon Plancarte (2017-18) for third all-time at UHV.
Kueck said Kaeppeli and the defenders take more pride in shutouts than goals or assists.
"I think for most of the defenders, it's more important to keep the clean sheet. Let the strikers do all the work," Kueck said. "So I think every defender and Tyler will agree with me that we're very happy about another clean sheet."
The Jaguars will hit the road for games at University of the Southwest and Paul Quinn College on Thursday and Saturday.
