Jags score 3 unanswered goals against Schreiner to stay perfect
Sophomore defender Trine Stenderup-Jorgensen called her shot on Friday.
Before the game, the 2023 All-RRAC first team defender told freshman Luz Capuchino the two would combine for a goal in Friday's non-conference finale against NCAA Division III side Schreiner at The Cage.
The Danish center back headed home a free kick from Capuchino in the 79th minute to seal a 3-1 win over the Mountaineers for UHV and push the Jaguars' record to an unblemished 3-0 heading into Red River Athletic Conference play next week.
"Seeing Luz over the ball, I knew that was the moment," Stenderup-Jorgensen said. "I saw the ball and I said, 'that's my ball.' I was just enjoying that moment and doing it for the team."
In 22 minutes off the bench, Capuchino made her impact felt.
In the 71st minute, two minutes after coming on in the second half, the Garland native put the finishing touch on a combination play from Kyleigh Spree-Kolos and Estelle Flanagan to net her first career goal and provide the eventual winner for the Jaguars.
"If you're in the right spot, you'll find ways to score goals," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "Hard work can get you into those right opportunities and you create chances like that."
Play off the bench proved to be the spark for UHV on Friday with substitutes accounting for nine of the team's 17 shots. The Jaguars put eight shots on goal, forcing Schreiner goalkeeper Jayden Ford into five saves.
"I thought we came in a little bit flat," Rigby said. "The girls who came off the bench, I think they were responsible for that change in momentum."
But no sub provided a bigger spark than junior Leslie Fierro.
One minute after the Jaguars conceded the opener in the 41st minute, Yesenia Vega found Fiero in the box, who headed home her first goal since joining the team.
"It felt amazing," Fierro said. "I knew we needed a goal so we could keep scoring. I just wanted to bring the energy and help the team win the game. It felt amazing. I did it for my sister and my family."
Fierro, Spree-Kolos, Flanagan, Noa Txintxurreta, Chloe Spencer and Kaydee Cox each had two shots on Friday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Franciezca Blancaflor earned the win in goal for the Jaguars.
The Jaguars head to Tyler next week for their conference openers against Texas College, on Sept. 19, and Jarvis Christian, on Sept. 21.
