The UHV women's soccer team got off to a flying start in conference play on Thursday.
The Jaguars had five different players score in a 5-0 win over Texas College to begin their Red River Athletic Conference slate.
Kaitlyn McCarty, Estelle Flanagan and Kaydee Cox scored in the eighth, 20th and 32nd minutes, respectively, to put the Jaguars up 3-0 at halftime. Rosa Reyes and Arantza Alva added goals in the 52nd and 77th minutes to round out the scoring for UHV (2-0-2, 1-0-0).
"We always hope to start conference play with a win," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "We played with good energy today and it showed. Now we want to take that momentum into Saturday against Jarvis."
The Jaguars managed 58 total shots on Thursday while holding the Steers (0-2-0, 0-1-0) without a shot.
McCarty's header in the eighth minute came off a cross from Katerin Morales. It was the freshman and Calallen native's first career goal.
In addition to her second career goal in the 32nd minute, Cox added an assist on Reyes goal in the 52nd. The freshman from Lindale tallied 10 total shots Thursday, which was one off the school record.
Flanagan's goal was the second of the year and the 22nd of her career.
Freshman goalkeeper Franciezca Blancaflor picked up the first win of her career in her first start between the posts.
