Jags set new record in win over Paul Quinn College
Nickole Stroman has put a lot into the UHV women's soccer program.
The senior defender has been with the Jaguars the last four years and was a part of the 2022 team which won 10 games and reached the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Conference tournament.
The Beeville native also contributed to a historic showing for UHV with a goal off the bench in a 10-0 win over conference foe Paul Quinn College on Saturday at The Cage, setting a new single-game record for goals scored.
"It feels great," said Stroman, whose goal Saturday was the second of her career. "I dedicate so much time to the sport and it's slowly paying off."
In total, eight different players found the back of the net for the Jaguars (8-2-0, 5-2-0). The win helped UHV move into a tie with Our Lady of the Lake for fourth place in the RRAC with 15 points.
"In games like today, I think it's important to hold a standard for ourselves," said head coach Adrian Rigby. "We want to make sure we're moving the ball quickly and being sharp about it. We did a good job of possessing the ball and finishing our chances when we had them."
Both Kyleigh Spree-Kolos and Aoife Saunders scored twice for the Jaguars.
Spree-Kolos found the net with a header off a Chloe Spencer cross in the seventh minute to open the scoring. She then scored again in the 23rd minute to put UHV up 3-0 after Estelle Flanagan's goal in the 15th minute.
The graduate senior from Victoria has scored six goals in four consecutive matches for the Jaguars. She now has 10 on the year, which is three away from tying the single season record shared by Sheliat Akapo (2013) and Emily Lupton (2015).
"She's finishing her chances well," Rigby said. "She's a handful up top, a powerful striker. So, I think she's getting some great distribution from the girls and she's finished her chances. So, I'm extremely excited for her, especially since she's a local girl."
Saunders' goal in the 72nd minute on an assist from Grace Arteaga broke a four-game goalless drought for the Canvey Island, England, native and put UHV up 7-0 against the Tigers (0-7-1, 0-6-1). She made it 9-0 five minutes later with an assist from Kaydee Cox.
"It feels good to come off the bench and make an impact," Saunders said. "I feel like I definitely did that with two goals this game."
Cox -- who led the team with three assists -- Kaitlyn Kongdara, Luz Capuchino, and Yesenia Vega also found the back of the net for the Jaguars. Vega, Ariana Briones (2) and Grace Arteaga made their way onto the scoresheet with assists.
UHV will go on the road next week to face (RV) LSU Alexandria on Oct. 17 and Louisiana Christian on Oct. 19.
