Van der Wath, No. 22 men’s golf lead after first day of UHV Fall Classic
Joshua Van der Wath continued his strong form on Monday to kick of the UHV Fall Classic at The Club at Colony Creek.
The senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, turned in a five-under 66 on Monday to claim the top spot on the leaderboard and help the No. 22-ranked Jaguars shoot a three-under 281 to lead the field. Monday marked a season-best round for the team as well.
Van der Wath's performance Monday was his second consecutive 66, which is one shot off the program record for lowest round last shot in 2021 by Jaxon Langford. After an opening bogey, Van der Wath rallied to play the next 17 holes bogey-free and six under. He had four birdies on the back nine for a four-under 31 to close the round. He leads Blinn College's Preston DeSerrano by two strokes.
Junior Lucky Boonsrirat had a season-best showing in the opening round.
The New Braunfels native carded a two-under 69 to sit T-3 heading into Tuesday's final round. He had four birdies on his card with 12 pars and just two bogeys.
Sophomore Nathan Biais (73, +1) and Paul Chopin (74, +3) each had an eagle on Monday. The French duo each eagled the Par 5 13th hole at Colony Creek. Biais is T-11 while Chopin is T-19 going into Tuesday.
Edgar Hinojosa (83, +12) is T-44 after the first round.
Competing as individuals, Ryan Romero (84, +13) is 46th while Brady Copley (85, +14) is 47th.
The final round will take place at Riverside Golf Course at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
