No. 22 Men’s golf downs Division I Texas Southern in dual match
Joshua Van der Wath flirted with history on Thursday.
The senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, fired a five-under 66 – one stroke off the all-time lowest round of 65 – at The Club at Colony Creek to claim the individual honors and help the No. 22-ranked Jaguars beat NCAA Division I program Texas Southern in a dual match.
UHV also kept its ratings streak alive by holding onto a spot in the NAIA Coaches' Poll Top 25 released on Thursday. The Jaguars have been ranked in 21 consecutive ratings dating back to October 2021.
Van der Wath, a third team All-American in 2024, kept a bogey-free scorecard with five birdies, including three on the back nine.
The senior's performance helped set the pace for UHV to shoot a combined score of 287 and beat the Tigers by 24 strokes.
Each of UHV's starting five finished in the Top 5 on Thursday with Edgar Hinojosa finishing second after shooting a two-over 73. The Pharr native had four birdies on his card for a career-best round at UHV.
Lucky Boonsrirat and Nathan Biais, also a third team All-American last year, tied for third after each shooting 74.
Boonsrirat tied Van der Wath for the team-lead in birdies with five on his card. Biais closed his round with an eagle on the Par 5 18th hole.
Paul Chopin finished fifth with a 75 and three birdies on Thursday.
Competing as individuals, Ryan Romero (80, +9) finished ninth and Brady Copley (89, +18) finished 12th.
The Jaguars will be back at Colony Creek on Monday to kick off the UHV Fall Classic. The tournament's second round will be at Riverside Golf Course on Tuesday.
