The UHV softball team dropped a pair of hard-fought games against NCAA Division III Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.
Despite multiple rally attempts and even forcing extra innings in Game 2, the Jaguars fell 8-5 and 4-3 (8 inn.) in the doubleheader at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
After falling behind 3-0 in Game 1, Jasmine Canales provided an RBI single to score Jayce Bolin and Allison Snedeker had a sacrifice fly to score Canales in the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-2 at the time.
The Jaguars (5-6) tried to mount a rally again in the fifth after falling behind 5-2. Claire Blinka's RBI double kicked off the inning's scoring to plate Snedeker. Deeandra Maldonado had a sacrifice fly to score Blinka and pull within 5-4. Blinka capped UHV's scoring in the seventh with an RBI groundout to score Jordan Jones.
UHV scored three unanswered runs between the fifth and seventh innings in Game 2 to force extras.
Jones and Kenzie Chambers executed a double steal in the fifth to open UHV's tally. Canales had a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Blinka. Chambers came around to tie the game in the seventh on an RBI double from Allison Snedeker.
Snedeker was 3-for-7 with a pair of RBIs and doubles in the doubleheader. Chambers was also 3-for-7 with a pair of stolen bases. Canales also had a pair of RBIs. Sarah Cortez had a team-leading three hits in Game 2.
Hope Quinones and Audrie Sayas were UHV's pitchers of record against the Cowgirls (7-1).
UHV returns to action at home on Monday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Ottawa (KS). It's a rematch from a 2024 NAIA Opening Round elimination game in which the Braves bested the Jaguars.
