Chambers sets new stolen base record as Jags split with No. 24 Baker (KS)
SAN ANTONIO – Senior Kenzie Chambers etched her name in the UHV record books once again on Saturday.
With a stolen base in the bottom of the first inning of a 4-2 win over No. 24 Baker (KS) in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Southwest Legacy High School, Chambers set a new career stolen base record. The Grand Prairie native eclipsed Madysin Leighton's previous mark of 90 set last season.
Chambers finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored as UHV split the two games. She leads the team in hits with 12. The 2024 NAIA First Team All-American has now reached base safely in the last 13 games for the Jaguars, a streak which dates back to last year's conference tournament.
DeeAndra Maldonado provided a big spark for the Jaguars (5-3) on Saturday.
The freshman from Alice homered in the fourth inning against No. 24-ranked Baker (KS) to break a 2-2 tie and eventually lift the Jaguars to a 4-2 win in Game 1. It was her first career home run.
Jordan Jones had the biggest impact in the first game, going 1-for-1 with three RBIs. The Woodlands native now leads the team with eight RBIs and is hitting at a .407 clip. She has hit safely in seven of UHV's first eight games.
Hope Quinones earned her third win of the season after allowing just two runs – all unearned – and four walks against four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
UHV battled hard in a 3-2 loss in Game 2 against the Wildcats (3-1).
The Jaguars took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Jones in the third inning, scoring Chambers. Alyssa Carter scored on an error in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2 before Baker plated its third and final run in the seventh.
Chambers, Jones, Allison Snedeker, Claire Blinka, Jasmine Canales and VeJeigh Zamora each tallied hits in Game 2.
Audrie Sayas was the pitcher of record in the loss despite working well to limit the damage from Baker's 11 hits to just three runs.
The Jaguars return home to face Missouri Baptist in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
