OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The ball just wouldn't fall UHV's way on Tuesday in the NAIA Softball Opening Round.
The Jaguars lost 5-0 to No. 2-ranked Oklahoma City in a winner's bracket game Tuesday afternoon before dropping a 3-2 contest to Ottawa in an elimination game Tuesday night. They were one win shy of reaching the Championship Round of the Opening Round.
UHV finishes its season 33-14 after the program's ninth appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. This year was the 13th 30-win season in the program's 17-year history.
Senior pitcher Cameron Cowan was on the hook for both losses despite turning in an incredible performance over 14 innings in which she struck out seven while allowing just five earned runs.
The Shiner native tossed a total of 190 pitches over the two games with 139 of them being strikes.
UHV got hits from Madysin Leighton, Kenzie Chambers, Allison Snedeker, Alana Ortega and Sarah Cortez in the Game 1 loss to the Stars (53-3).
Snedeker and Claire Blinka each had an RBI in Game 2 against the Braves (40-17).
Blinka delivered an RBI single, scoring Chambers in the bottom of the first to respond to an RBI single from Katie Enneking.
Snedeker tried to spark a rally with an RBI double in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2 after Chambers trotted home.
The loss marks the end of the UHV careers for Cowan, Leighton, Ortega and Cameron Steen.
