A four-run first inning in Game 2 of Friday's Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader against Texas A&M-Texarkana helped UHV softball salvage a split with a 6-1 win.
The Jaguars fell 1-0 in Game 1 despite scattering six hits, marking their first conference loss of the season.
UHV (17-5, 9-1), who is receiving votes in the NAIA National Rankings, got runs from Madysin Leighton, Kaylle Lopez, Claire Blinka and Allison Snedeker for its four-spot to open Game 2, capitalizing on three total errors from the Eagles (11-13, 6-6).
Kenzie Chambers and Bri Strother had the lone RBIs for the Jaguars.
Chambers finished the doubleheader 3-for-7 at the plate with a double.
Leighton was 2-for-3 with a triple, two stolen bases and two runs in Game 2.
Anyssia Mendoza earned her sixth win of the season and improved to 5-0 in conference play after six strong innings in which she allowed one run on four hits. Hope Quinones only needed five pitches to throw a perfect seventh inning and seal the win.
Cameron Cowan suffered just her second loss of the season despite seven strong innings in which the Shiner native allowed just one run.
Behind the senior right-hander, the Jaguars worked to strand 14 Eagles in Game 1.
UHV hosts LSU Alexandria in a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
