Records fall as Jags sweep Texas College
TYLER – The UHV softball team toppled multiple records en route to a sweep of Texas College on Saturday.
The Jaguars (27-8, 14-4) beat the Steers (12-11,7-9) 10-7 and 9-4 to extend their winning streak to six games.
Cameron Cowan earned her 49th career win after pitching a complete game in Game 1, breaking Emily Bergstrom's (2010-12) previous mark of 48. The Shiner native is now 14-3 in the circle after her seven-strikeout performance a day after breaking the career strikeout record.
Kenzie Chambers is now the single-season stolen base record holder with 45 – which ranks second in the NAIA – after swiping eight total bags in Saturday's twinbill and taking the record away from Rachel Laird (43 in 2014. With five steals in Game 2 alone, she was one shy of tying the single-game stolen base record, which she set in a 10-0 win over Xavier (La.) in March.
The junior from Grand Prairie also tied the program's single-game hits record by going 5-for-5 in Game 2. She joins her coach Lindsey Ortiz (2009), Kristen Lindley (2009), Shelby Smith (2014) and Gabby Davila (2017) as the only UHV players to accomplish the feat.
The Jaguars trailed 6-2 entering the fourth inning of Game 1 before Chambers sparked a five-run frame with a 2-run double. Claire Blinka gave the Jaguars the lead with a two-run home run to center field, her fifth of the season.
Chambers has hit safely in each of the last seven games for UHV, boasting a .750 average and nine RBIs in that time. Her .538 average this season ranks third nationally.
Kaylle Lopez's two-run double and Allison Snedeker's RBI groundout in the sixth inning sealed the come-from-behind win for UHV. Lopez's 48 RBIs this season ranks second nationally.
Snedeker went 3-for-3 in Game 2 with a home run and three runs scored. It was the Friendswood native's team-leading sixth this season.
Jayce Bolin also went deep in the 9-4 win with a two-run home run in the third inning to drive in Alana Ortega.
Eryn Sanchez earned her second win of the season after throwing five innings and striking out four while surrendering just three runs. The sophomore also helped her own cause with 3 RBIs at the plate.
The Jaguars will have the next week off after Huston-Tillotson was forced to forfeit the rest of its season. The team resumes play on April 20 at University of the Southwest.
