ALEXANDRIA, La. – The UHV softball team opened its season with a four-game split at the Louisiana Christian Invitational at the Champions Sportsplex.
The Jaguars (2-2) notched a 7-5 win over Webber International in the season opener on Friday.
Kenzie Chambers led the way from the top of the order, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs to help UHV open the season with a win. Sarah Cortez had a pair of RBIs to go with a 1-for-4 showing at the plate. Jordan Jones was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
Hope Quinones earned the win in the circle after pitching a complete-game effort in which she struck out three batters.
The Jaguars then fell 18-8 to Central Baptist in the second game on Friday despite scattering 14 hits.
Chambers, Jones, Allison Snedeker and Jasmine Canales each had multi-hit performances. Snedeker was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run. Canales was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Nine different Jaguars recorded hits in the loss.
Audrie Sayas was the pitcher of record for UHV against the Mustangs.
UHV opened Saturday with a 5-3 loss to William Woods University.
Claire Blinka and Kaylle Lopez homered for the Jaguars in the loss, both solo shots in the sixth and second innings, respectively. Jones had the third RBI for UHV and Chambers had a two-hit performance against the Owls.
Quinones was the pitcher of record in the loss.
The Jaguars closed out the weekend with a 4-3 win over Central Christian (KS) on Saturday.
A three-run fourth inning with an RBI single from Lopez and a two-run home run from VeJeigh Zamora put UHV up 3-2 at the time. Blinka delivered the decisive blow with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to break a 3-3 tie.
Blinka, Lopez and Canales each went 2-for-3 in the game. Eight different Jaguars notched a hit against Central Christian.
Sayas earned the win with a complete-game effort, striking out five while allowing just a pair of earned runs.
The Jaguars host NCAA Division III foe Schreiner University in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
