HOBBS, N.M. – The (RV) UHV softball team had an explosive afternoon as it reached the 30-win mark with a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of University of the Southwest on Saturday.
The Jaguars (30-8, 16-4 RRAC) downed the Mustangs 14-8 and 14-5, in five innings, marking the 13th time in the program's 16-year history they've reached 30 wins.
UHV had to rally in Game 1 after falling behind by four runs after two innings. But the Jaguars rallied for seven runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 7-5 lead.
Eryn Sanchez and Madysin Leighton got the rally started, first with an RBI double from Sanchez and then a two-run, inside-the-park home run from Leighton – her first home run of the season. Sanchez had a two-run double the next inning to tie the game before she and Cameron Steen scored on errors to put UHV in front.
Sanchez finished Game 1 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs while Leighton was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
UHV jumped out early in Game 2, taking a 7-1 lead by the second inning against Southwest (12-24, 3-21 RRAC).
Allison Snedeker sparked the offensive outburst with an RBI double in the first before hitting her seventh home run of the year in the second inning, a two-run shot that highlighted a five-run frame.
The Jaguars punctuated the win with a six-run fifth inning to induce the run-rule.
Kaylle Lopez opened the scoring in the fifth with a two-run double followed by an RBI single from Claire Blinka. Sanchez and Jayce Bolin had RBIs in the inning, as well.
Lopez finished 3-for-3 in Game 2 with four RBIs while Snedeker and Bolin each had three. Blinka was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Anyssia Mendoza picked up the win in Game 1 and improved to 8-5 on the season after throwing three innings of relief for starter Cameron Cowan. Mendoza allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters, tying a season-high.
Sanchez threw four innings in Game 2 to improve to 3-0 in the circle. The sophomore allowed just one run on two hits to earn the win.
The Jaguars will close out the regular season on Tuesday at home with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against No. 1-ranked Our Lady of the Lake.
