Men’s golf set for DBU Classic, last test before conference
The No. 17-ranked UHV men's golf team will look to make its final touches before the Red River Athletic Conference tournament at the Dallas Baptist University Classic this week at Robson Ranch Wildhorse Golf Club in Denton.
The Jags have won three tournaments this year and are coming off a final round at The Battle at the Primm two weeks ago in which they tied for the lowest final round score (286).
"We're going to a tournament where scores in the past have been considerably low," said head coach Garrett Adair. "I think this is a good tournament for us to really get things going and see some red numbers, and build on the final round success at The Primm. Hopefully we get some red numbers in Denton and see if we build some more confidence going into conference."
Jacob Flores led the way in the final round in California, shooting a season-best 68 at the par 71 course.
The senior from Pharr had a team-best five birdies in the final round to finish tied for 16th.
"I'm hoping this will be the catapult for him," Adair said of Flores. "He's had some rounds where he wasn't able to finish it off. Now that he's seen that he can and has done it in a really good field, I'm hoping this pushes him forward to have confidence finishing off an under-par round."
Carson Caylor notched his fifth consecutive Top 15 finish with scores of 74, 71 and 71 in the three rounds.
Will Paton joined Caylor and Flores with a round under par last time out, shooting a 1-under 70 in the second round at Primm Valley Golf Club.
Adair hopes the team builds on their patience from the final round two weeks ago.
"There's 54 holes. Not everything is going to happen in nine holes," Adair said. "We've all heard the saying; it's a marathon, not a sprint. So I think just staying patient, that's the name of the game when we get to conference and nationals. Especially at nationals because it's 72 holes of golf."
