(RV)/#11 Jags down Prairie View A&M for second DI win
PRAIRIE VIEW – For the second time in a week, the UHV baseball team took down a Division I opponent.
The Jaguars (20-2) beat Prairie View A&M 4-3 at Tankersley Field on Tuesday thanks to a late rally. The win comes six days after UHV beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. UHV is now on an 11-game winning streak, the third-longest in program history.
UHV opened the scoring in the fourth inning when a ground ball by Terry Burrel III drove in Cristian Garcia.
The Panthers (4-9) answered back with two RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead.
Burrel then sparked a one-out rally with an RBI single, his second RBI of the game, to tie it and drive in Jean Michael Gonzalez. Jose Montanez followed suit with a single to drive in Hal Perez and give the Jaguars the lead. Jackson Purcell's RBI double scored Terry Burrel and capped the scoring.
Prairie View cut the two-run deficit in half with a solo home run in the eighth.
Purcell went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Burrel was 1-for-4 with a team-leading two RBIs. Eight Jaguars tallied a hit on Tuesday.
Purcell is now on a six-game hitting streak. Graduate senior Cristian Garcia, who was named RRAC Player of the Week Tuesday morning, notched a hit to extend his on-base streak to a mind-boggling 22 games.
Mason Longoria earned his NAIA-leading sixth win of the season after striking out six over six innings while allowing just two runs.
Justin Mireles followed Longoria to throw 1.1 innings of relief, striking out a pair.
Andrew Hurrelbrink hurled a perfect 1.2 innings in which he struck out four of the five batters he faced to pick up his first save of the season.
The Jaguars return to Red River Athletic Conference play Friday and Saturday with a three-game series at Jarvis Christian.
