HOBBS, N.M. – Cold and wet conditions didn't stop the UHV baseball team from hitting the ball on Saturday.
The Jaguars hit five home runs in Saturday's Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep against University of the Southwest, winning 4-3 and 20-6 at Jake Williams Field.
The 20 runs in Game 2 are the most this season by UHV (18-7, 7-4)
Four of the five homers came in Game 2's run-rule rout of the Mustangs (14-12, 5-6). Junior Kaden Fikac had two on the day, including a three-run shot in the sixth inning of Game 2. They were the Victoria native's fourth and fifth home runs this season, matching Hal Perez for the team lead.
Julian DeLeon and Jeron Petterson notched their first career homers on Saturday.
DeLeon, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nevada, hit a solo homer in the fifth inning of Game 2 to spark a six-run frame for the Jaguars. Jose Montanez later followed in the same inning with a three-run home run.
Petterson capped UHV's scoring in Game 2 with an exclamation mark, hitting a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning, scoring Langston White, Richie Gill Jr. and Jean Michael Gonzalez.
In total, 12 different Jaguars recorded a hit as the team scattered 17 in Game 2. DeLeon, Montanez, Fikac, Levi Whitlock and Raul Lopez each had two hits.
With hits in each of Saturday's games, Lopez extended his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games. Hayden Leopold did the same and is now sitting on a 10-game hitting streak.
Hal Perez had the decisive RBI in Game 1 with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly to score Gonzalez.
Mason Longoria picked up his fourth win of the season after tossing his fourth complete game. The Victoria native struck out six over seven innings of work. He has now won in three consecutive starts.
Julian Garcia improved to 5-1 on the bump, inlcuding 3-0 in his last three starts, after allowing just two runs on five hits in five innings of work in Game 2. Drew Bradbury and Matthew Mejia each pitched an inning of relief behind Garcia.
UHV will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
