Fikac’s homer powers Jags to sweep of Texas College
Kaden Fikac got the scoring started in a big way for the UHV baseball team on Saturday.
The 6-foot-4 Victoria native sent an off-speed pitch over the right field wall in the first inning against Texas College Saturday for a three-run home run as the Jaguars beat the Steers 10-2 to complete the three-game Red River Athletic Conference sweep.
It was the sixth homer of the season for Fikac, which leads the team. He finished with a team-leading four RBIs.
"It was fun," Fikac said. "I was looking for an off-speed pitch up and in, and I got one. Just happy to put some runs up on the board and get it rolling. We've been rolling all weekend, but it was good to get it started today."
UHV (24-9, 12-6) combined for 54 runs in the three-game set at Riverside Stadium this weekend.
Ten different players recorded a hit Saturday with Juan Martin, Hal Perez and Jeron Petterson each driving in a run in addition to Fikac's offensive showing.
Raul Lopez extended his hitting streak to 19 games by going 1-for-4 with a run scored on Saturday.
"It's always nice to get three wins against anybody. To get the sweep feels great," said head coach Jonathan Stavinoha. "Obviously, we wanted to hit the ball a little better and have some better at-bats. But you can't look back. At the end of the day, we did what we wanted to do which was a sweep of Texas College."
Julian Garcia earned his sixth win of the season after allowing just one unearned on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
He gave way for Matthew Mejia to throw the sixth inning allowing three hits and one run.
Carson McKenna earned his first save of the season after throwing a hitless three innings behind Mejia. The senior from Splendora struck out three Steers (0-21, 0-18) to earn the save.
Over the last 7.2 innings he's pitched, McKenna has allowed only seven hits and three runs across three games.
"He's got the experience and he's really showed it these last few outings," Stavinoha said. "He's one that puts in the work to be there in the end. He's really showed it these last few weeks."
The Jaguars host Our Lady of the Lake at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference game before heading to Huston-Tillotson for a three-game RRAC series the following weekend.
