FORT WORTH – The UHV baseball team carried its offensive onslaught from Saturday into Sunday.
The Jaguars put up a season-high 18 runs against Texas Wesleyan in Game 1 of a doubleheader to win 18-4 and earn a split after an 8-3 loss in Game 2. Sunday's results snapped a six-game winning streak for the Jaguars.
UHV (8-2) broke Game 1 open in the top of the third inning, plating 12 runs on nine hits. The Jaguars sent 16 batters to the plate and picked up RBIs from Jose Montanez (2), Jackson Purcell (3), DeeAndre Torres (2), Cristian Garcia, Hal Perez and Terry Burrel III.
The Jaguars scored 14 runs unanswered between the first and third innings.
Perez highlighted the offensive onslaught, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a pair of doubles. Burrel was 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two triples and was a home run shy of the cycle.
Torres, Garcia and Purcell each had multi-hit and multi-RBI showings in Game 1. All nine of UHV's starters picked up a hit on Sunday.
Brady Parker earned his second win and improved to 2-0 on the mound after tossing five innings in which he allowed four runs – only two of which were earned – on four hits while striking out eight. Matthew Mejia made his first appearance this season for UHV, tossing two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out two.
UHV took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth in Game 2. Texas Wesleyan plated six runs on five hits and two errors in the sixth to eventually win the game.
Purcell, Jean Michael Gonzalez and Juan Perez had UHV's RBIs. Hal Perez went 3-for-3 in the second game.
Mason Longoria suffered his first loss of the season despite striking out seven over 5.2 innings.
The Jaguars return home this week to open Red River Athletic Conference play with a three-game set against University of the Southwest. The series starts with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and the series finale at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
