TYLER – Two strong offensive performances helped the UHV baseball team sweep a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Woldert Park.
The Jaguars (14-2, 5-0) extended their winning streak to five games with 17-5 and 14-1 (8 inn.) wins in the two games.
In Game 1, UHV scored 14 unanswered runs across the first four innings with Terry Burrel III highlighting the offensive onslaught with four RBIs over the first four frames. UHV scored three of those 14 runs via three separate bases-loaded walks.
Burrel and Rafael Gutierrez shined in Game 1, each going 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Eight different Jaguars recorded a hit while nine different players recorded an RBI as UHV scattered 13 hits. Freshman Brady Thompson picked up his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly in Game 1.
Brady Parker improved to 4-0 on the mound after tossing four innings, striking out six while allowing three runs – two of which were earned – on two hits. Matthew Mejia threw two hitless innings out of the bullpen behind Parker before Marcos Moreno closed the game out in the seventh.
In Game 2, UHV jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning with Burrel blasting his second home run to lead off the inning. A sacrifice fly by Juan Perez put the Jaguars up 2-0 before Cristian Garcia capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run single.
Then, the Jaguars scored each of their next four runs via the long ball with homers from DeeAndre Torres, Garcia and Jose Montanez in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, respectively. It was the first of the year for Torres and team-leading third of the season for Montanez.
After allowing an unearned run to score, the Jaguars then rattled off six unanswered runs – five of which came in the eighth.
Burrel finished Game 2 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Garcia went 3-for-4 with a team-leading three RBIs in the second game. Torres and Montanez also had multi-hit, multi-RBI performances in the second game.
Jonathan Jones also improved to 4-0 on the mound after tossing a season-high 10 strikeouts while allowing one unearned run on three hits over six innings of work. The Jaguars have won each of the Manvel native's five starts this season.
Drew Bradbury and Justin Mireles combined to toss two hitless innings of relief. Mireles struck out the side to close out the game in the eighth.
