PINEVILLE, La. – A clutch hit just never came for the (RV) UHV baseball team on Friday.
The Jaguars dropped its Red River Athletic Conference series-opening doubleheader with Louisiana Christian 3-2 (8 innings) and 5-4 (9 innings) on a pair of extra-inning walkoffs at Billy Allgood Field in Red River Athletic Conference play.
With the two losses, it marked just the fourth time in eight series this season UHV (30-13, 17-9) has dropped a series.
Juan Martin highlighted the day for UHV against the Wildcats (26-15, 16-10) with a pair of RBI hits in eight at-bats. Hayden Leopold saw the ball well, going 4-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader.
After falling behind 2-0 in Game 2 of the series, Jean Michael Gonzalez sparked a three-run fourth inning with a solo home run to left-center field, his second homer this year and third in his UHV career. RBIs from Kaden Fikac and Martin gave UHV a 3-2 lead at the time.
Richard Gill Jr made it a 4-2 game when he scored on an error in the fifth inning of Game 2.
Justin Mireles and Carson McKenna were the pitchers of record for the Jaguars after throwing a combined 3.1 innings of relief for starters Brady Parker and Mason Longoria.
Harrison Waxley delivered the decisive blow in Game 1 with an RBI single before hitting a game-tying, two-run home run in the sixth inning of Game 2. Nicolas Brunet had the walk-off single in the ninth inning of Game 2.
The winning run in Game 1 was scored with two outs and there were no outs when the winning run was scored in Game 2. It was just the third and fourth times the Jaguars had lost one-run ballgames this season.
The series concludes at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
