FORT WORTH – The UHV baseball team's bats made the 311-mile journey to Sycamore Park and brought plenty of noise on Saturday.
The Jaguars exploded for 27 runs and 26 hits as they swept Midland University (Neb.) 11-4 and 16-2 in a doubleheader at Sycamore Park.
UHV's 16 runs in Game 2 are a season-high output as the team improved to 8-1 on the season.
Jean Michael Gonzalez and Jackson Purcell each notched their first home runs of the season in the first and second games, respectively.
Gonzalez finished the double-header 4-for-7 with four RBIs and four runs scored. For Purcell, whose three-run shot highlighted an eight-run bottom of the sixth in Game 2, the Moses Lake, Wash., native finished Game 2 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.
Between the two games, seven different players had multi-hit performances with DeeAndre Torres, Hal Perez, Terry Burrel III, Jose Montanez and Juan Perez joining in on the fun. Perez finished the double-header 4-for-6 with two RBIs in the nine-hole for the Jaguars.
Freshman Brady Thompson recorded his first collegiate hit with a pinch-hit single in Game 2, which he later came around to score.
Reigning Red River Athletic Conference and NAIA Ball Pitcher of the Week Jonathan Jones made his best case to defend the honors in Game 1.
The Manvel native threw five strong innings, letting up just three runs – two of which were earned – while striking out a season-high nine batters to move to 3-0 on the mound. He turned the ball over to Marcos Moreno, who surrendered just one run on three hits over two innings of relief in his UHV debut.
Julian Garcia earned his second win of the season after six innings in which he let up just two runs on four hits while striking out six. Ryan Rodriguez threw a scoreless seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts to seal the win.
The Jaguars will face Texas Wesleyan, which is ranked No. 25 in the NAIA Ball Media Poll, in a 12 p.m. doubleheader Sunday at Sycamore Park.
