The UHV men's soccer team enters a crucial week in the Red River Athletic Conference postseason race fresh off two strong wins.
The Jaguars (6-2-2, 4-2-1; 13 pts.) sit in sixth place in the conference standings with six matches left. The top eight qualify for the conference tournament with the top four teams hosting quarterfinal matches.
UHV trails second-place LSU Alexandria (7-3-2, 5-0-2; 17 pts.) and third-place Louisiana Christian (8-2-2, 5-1-1; 16 pts.) heading into this week's matches against the Generals, on Thursday, and Wildcats, on Saturday.
After a 4-2 win over Southwest last Thursday and a 7-1 win over Paul Quinn College on Saturday, the Jaguars are hoping to continue that momentum into this weekend in Louisiana. Senior center back Matt Sturgeon was also named RRAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Right now, freshman Mathias Jorstad is enjoying a red-hot run with four goals and two assists in the last two matches. He had a hat trick and an assist in Saturday's win, becoming the second UHV player this season to record a hat trick alongside sophomore Yahir Pena.
The Jaguars have seen 14 different players find the back of the net this season, including seven who have scored multiple times this season.
UHV's 30 total goals and average of three goals per game is tied for the conference lead with Xavier (La.) while the team's point total (goals+assists) of 88 leads the conference.
Senior Diby Kouassi ranks fourth in the conference in assists with four this season while freshman Dario Elsen is 10th in goals scored (5).
UHV's defense has been strong this season, ranking second in Goals Allowed Average (1.10) and Goals Allowed (11). Goalkeepers Eric Thust and Tyler Kaeppeli have been called into action to make 41 combined saves this season.
The Jaguars hold a 6-4-1 edge in the all-time series with LSUA, but are looking to avenge a narrow 1-0 loss from last year. This is the fourth meeting all-time between UHV and the Wildcats with the Jaguars holding a 1-2-1 record in the young series.
