UHV’s Sayas garners last RRAC Pitcher of the Week of season
WACO – Audrie Sayas and the UHV softball team closed the regular season strong with a sweep of Huston-Tillotson on Saturday.
Because of that, the Red River Athletic Conference named Sayas its final Pitcher of the Week on Monday. She's the second Jaguar to be recognized this season, joining Alyssa Carter who was named Player of the Week in February, and the first pitcher from UHV this season to earn the award.
"It means a lot to get this award for the sole purpose of recognizing hard work," Sayas said. "I have worked extremely hard to be the athlete I am today, so being acknowledged feels great! I feel this is a true reflection of who we are as a team. I have a great team behind me and have full trust in them when we step on the field. I'm excited to see what we can do this week in the conference tournament."
Sayas delivered five shutout innings in a 6-1 win over Huston-Tillotson to help the Jaguars (27-19, 19-9) extend their winning streak to a season-best eight games.
The junior from Harlingen struck out five batters while allowing just two hits and a walk to earn her team-leading 11th win this season. She and graduate senior Hope Quinones have both eclipsed double digits in victories.
"Audrie set the tone this week with her incredible performance," said head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "Her success is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our entire pitching staff. We're proud of what we've accomplished so far, and we're even more excited to carry this momentum into the conference tournament."
UHV enters this week's RRAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and faces fifth-seeded Texas A&M-San Antonio in the first round at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Louisiana Christian's Wildcat Park in Pineville, Louisiana.
