UHV’s Carter named RRAC Player of the Week
WACO – Alyssa Carter has turned heads recently with her play over the last week-plus for the UHV softball team.
So much so that the Red River Athletic Conference named the sophomore from Sugar Land its Player of the Week for Feb. 17-23 on Tuesday. This is the first weekly award garnered by a UHV softball player this season and first since Kenzie Chambers earned the honor on April 8, 2024.
Carter had a monster week, hitting .786 (11-for-14) with an .800 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage, nine RBIs, three doubles and two runs scored as UHV (9-7, 2-0) went 4-1 vs. Ottawa, Concordia and Huston-Tillotson.
"I knew I had to capitalize on my opportunity," Carter said. "This means a lot because I've worked hard to be where I am at right now. I'm very excited to head into the rest of the season with my teammates because we have a lot of talented girls. We have a lot of seniors and I want to do what I can to make it a memorable season."
Carter is on an eight-game hitting streak dating back to UHV's second game of the year against Central Baptist on Jan. 31, and has started each of the last seven games in the outfield for the Jaguars.
She had a career day in UHV's 14-5 win over Concordia (Texas) on Tuesday, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs. Both marks are the high-water marks for UHV in hits and RBIs.
Carter's .667 batting average this season leads the team and the RRAC. She's gone 10-for-10 in her last 10 at-bats.
"Alyssa is such a dynamic player and I'm so impressed with her ability to thrive in pressure situations," said head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "She did an incredible job last week and I'm excited to see her continue to compete throughout conference play."
The Jaguars host Texas A&M-San Antonio in an RRAC doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, and No. 1 Our Lady of the Lake in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
