Jags fall to No. 1 OLLU in doubleheader despite extra-inning bout

Even though moral victories won't show up in a box score, the UHV softball team walked away Tuesday with heads high.

The Jaguars gave top-ranked Our Lady of the Lake one of its best tests this season in a thrilling 2-1, nine-inning loss in Game 1 of a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex. UHV fell 5-0 in Game 2.

The Jaguars (30-10, 18-6) opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single on a squeeze bunt from Allison Snedeker to score Madysin Leighton, who led off the inning with a triple to right field.

The Saints (47-1, 24-0) answered the next inning with an RBI single from Kayla Dreese to tie the game.

Senior Cameron Cowan worked to hold OLLU scoreless and to four hits over the next seven innings.

Cowan threw all nine innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out six in what was just her fourth loss of the season. She tried to help her own cause at the plate, as well, going 2-for-3 at the plate as the lone Jaguar with a multi-hit performance.

Leighton, Snedeker, Kenzie Chambers and Jayce Bolin each had one hit in Game 1.

OLLU scored the go-ahead run in Game 1 on an error with two outs in the ninth inning.

UHV was stymied in Game 2, mustering two hits – one each from Snedeker and Kaylle Lopez.

Eryn Sanchez was charged with her first loss of the season in Game 2 after allowing five runs on eight hits.

Anyssia Mendoza came on for the final 3.2 innings, holding the Saints scoreless on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Tuesday closed out the regular season and the Jaguars currently hold the No. 3 seed as other teams wrap up their regular seasons. The Red River Athletic Conference tournament kicks off May 2 at Louisiana Christian and LSU Alexandria.
