A&M-Victoria softball opens season with sweep of Huston-Tillotson
The Texas A&M University-Victoria softball team started the season strong on Saturday.
The Jaguars swept Huston-Tillotson, 18-0 (5 inn.) and 9-0 (5 inn.), at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex behind two all-around performances. A&M-Victoria (2-0) scored its 27 runs on 31 hits while allowing just seven hits.
With the two wins over the Rams, A&M-Victoria improved to 44-6 all-time against the former Red River Athletic Conference foe.
"I'm super excited about what we put on the field today," said head coach Lindsey Ortiz. "The kids have been working really hard to be prepared and I think that showed. I think our offense is really dynamic and we run bases well. We have some gap-to-gap hitters that we're going to be able to rely on. I'm super happy with the pitching staff; any time you get two shutouts, it's a great day. I'm really excited about what they've done so far and how they're going to be able to build on this."
Junior Angelina Morales provided one of the many strong offensive performances on Saturday.
The Pasadena native and San Jacinto College transfer went 4-for-6 with five RBIs across the two games. She drove in four of those RBIs in Game 1 and went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two stolen bases in Game 2.
"I was actually really happy because I was really looking forward to seeing how this team was going to compete," Morales said. "I think we have a great group of girls."
Madison Carr had a three-RBI showing in Game 1 as the Jaguars got RBIs from 10 different players.
Game 1
A&M-Victoria wasted no time getting the scoring going in the 2026 season, plating two runs in first inning and scored in each of their four offensive frames.
Khamryn Werdlow scored on a throwing error for the game's first run before Morales drove in Alyssa Carter in the very next at-bat.
Then floodgates opened for the Jaguars in the second with a massive 11-run inning.
Carr, Carter, Morales, Emily Mayo and Kitty Coe had RBIs during the explosive frame as the Jaguars sent 16 batters to the plate.
Haley Noska earned the win in the pitcher's circle after hurling a one-hit gem.
The Hallettsville native allowed just one hit while striking out three over three innings of work for her first win as a Jaguar after transferring from McLennan Community College.
"I think it was a great start to our season to open up with (two) wins," Noska said. "We needed the confidence going forward and just know that we can do it and that we can win."
Keira Reis and Kailea Freeman each threw a scoreless inning of relief behind Noska to close out the season-opening win.
Game 2
The Jaguars' continued their offensive onslaught by scoring three runs in each of the first three innings in Game 2.
Werdlow opened the scoring on a wild pitch on a walk to Carter, who came around to score on the same play thanks to a throwing error by the Rams' catcher before Cristela Trevino picked up an RBI single two batters later.
Werdlow and Morales added RBIs in the second before Morales came home on an error after she stole third base.
All three runs in the third came with two outs and were unearned as Werdlow scored on an error and Carter on a wild pitch. Trevino's RBI single capped the scoring for the Jaguars.
Trevino was 2-for-2 at the plate with the lone multi-RBI game for A&M-Victoria in Game 2.
Zoe Hardy earned the win in Game 2 to kick off her career as a Jaguar. The Walla Walla, Washington, native, allowed just three hits while striking out a pair.
Madelyn Butler and Jocelyne Galvan each threw an inning of relief behind Hardy. Butler pitched a perfect fourth inning and Galvan picked up a strikeout against one hit allowed.
