Alva’s first-half goal extends Jags streak in openers

WAXAHACHIE – Arantza Alva didn't need much time to get going in the 2024 season opener.

The sophomore from McAllen provided a 37th-minute goal, four minutes after entering the game off the bench, in a 1-0 win over Nelson University to open the season on Thursday. It was just the second career goal for Alva, who featured in six matches last season for the Jaguars (1-0).

With the win, UHV remains unbeaten in its last five season openers.

Senior Estelle Flanagan had a team-high three shots, including two on goal, while fellow forward Kyleigh Spree-Kolos had two shots, including one on goal. The Jaguars were efficient in their attack, putting the ball on frame five out of the seven shots they took. Prisila Campos was the other Jaguar with a shot against the Lions (1-2).

Senior goalkeeper Hayli Nichols earned her third clean sheet at UHV after making a pair of saves. Nelson attempted 10 total shots on Thursday.

The Jaguars continue their road trip on Saturday with a 5 p.m. non-conference bout with Texas Wesleyan.
