Jags draw with Lady Rams in season opener

The UHV women's soccer team settled for a draw in its season opener with Texas Wesleyan on Thursday at The Cage.

With the 2-2 result, the Jaguars extended their unbeaten run in season openers to four matches.

Clara Strand netted the first goal of the match in the 35th minute on a through ball from freshman defender Trine Stenderup-Jorgensen. It was the sophomore's 12th career goal for UHV (0-0-1).

The Swedish forward totaled three of the Jaguars' 13 shots on Thursday while Texas Wesleyan (1-1-1) had 11 total shots.

After a 65th minute equalizer by the Lady Rams' Gracie Spradley, freshman Kaydee Cox opened her scoring account in the 69th minute to put UHV up 2-1 at the time. The Lindale, Texas, native got in on goal thanks to assists from Stenderup-Jorgensen and Estelle Flanagan.

Texas Wesleyan then equalized with four seconds left in the match after Mikayla Trevino scored on a set piece.

Junior goalkeeper Hayli Nichols was called into action for four saves, three of which came in the first half.

The Jaguars return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Southwest Assemblies of God University.
