Jags sweep TAMUSA, Ortiz notches 300th win
SAN ANTONIO – UHV's longest tenured softball coached reached another milestone on Tuesday.
With a 7-1 and 11-2 Red River Athletic Conference sweep of Texas A&M-San Antonio at the Our Lady of the Lake softball field, head coach Lindsey Ortiz recorded her 300th win as UHV's head coach.
The wins also extended the Jaguars' winning streak to eight games.
"It's an honor to reach this milestone," Ortiz said. "It's a testament to the teams that have come before, but also the team we have right now. We're playing at an extremely high level. This wouldn't be possible if not for the players our program has been blessed with."
UHV (16-4, 8-0) used a six-run seventh inning in Game 2 to seal the sweep with an RBI double by Kaylle Lopez to score Kenzie Chambers setting the table for Claire Blinka's 2-run home run, her fourth homer of the season.
Blinka finished the twinbill 3-for-7 with four RBIs, all of which came in Game 2. Lopez was 3-for-7 with five RBIs between the two games.
Jayce Bolin had a pair of RBIs in Game 1, joining Lopez as the only UHV players with multiple RBIs in the game.
Chambers went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with two stolen bases and five runs scored.
Madysin Leighton tied the UHV single-game triples record with two in Game 1. It's the eighth time in program history and first since Ashley Reyna did so against University of the Southwest in 2021. She finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with four runs scored and a stolen base.
Cameron Cowan and Anyssia Mendoza earned the wins in the pitcher's circle for UHV on Tuesday.
Cowan, a senior from Shiner, improved to 10-1 this season after throwing a complete game and allowing one run on five hits in Game 1.
Mendoza is now 5-3 in the circle and a perfect 4-0 in conference play. The sophomore from Mathis allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits in six innings of work in Game 2. Graduate senior Hope Quinones struck out the side for a hitless seventh inning to close out the game.
UHV returns home Friday to face Texas A&M-Texarkana for its Mentor Day. Prior to the game, students from Hopkins Elementary will be recognized for their participation in the softball team's Mentor Program which dedicates time to helping students succeed in school. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here.
