HAWKINS – The No. 10-ranked UHV baseball team claimed a series win over Jarvis Christian on Friday.
The Jaguars split Friday's doubleheader, dropping Game 1, 6-5, before bouncing right back Game 2, 9-2.
UHV (22-3, 11-1) got the scoring started immediately in Game 2 with RBIs from Hal Perez and Jackson Purcell to put the Jaguars up 2-0 in the first inning. The Bulldogs tied Game 2 in the third with a pair of RBI hits.
The Jaguars then responded with seven unanswered runs between the fifth and ninth innings, including a three-run seventh.
Juan Perez highlighted the seventh with a two-run single to score Jose Montanez. Jean Michael Gonzalez hit the first of his two sacrifice flies in the seventh to put UHV up 7-2 on the Bulldogs (1-9, 1-8); his second sac fly capped the scoring in the ninth.
DeeAndre Torres was 4-for-5 from his leadoff spot. Juan Perez was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Gonzalez also had two RBIs. Purcell, Hal Perez and Rafael Gutierrez also had RBIs in Game 2.
Julian Garcia earned his fifth win of the season after throwing six innings on Friday. Andrew Hurrelbrink, Mason Longoria and Jacob Baker combined to throw three shutout innings of relief behind Garcia.
The Bulldogs plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take Game 1. That came after the Jaguars scored four unanswered runs to open the game including RBI doubles from DeeAndre Torres and Hal Perez in the third inning. The loss snapped a 12-game winning streak by the Jaguars, which was tied for the second-longest in program history.
Justin Mireles was charged with the loss after allowing one run in 0.2 innings. Jonathan Jones got the start and allowed five runs – four of which were earned – in 5.1 innings while striking out six.
UHV returns home to face Texas A&M-Texarkana next Friday and Saturday as part of Free Ticket Weekend presented by Atzenhoffer. Friday night will be the Jaguars' second annual Little League Night with all four Victoria Little Leagues honored with an on-field pregame ceremony.
